Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting, “Girl Reading a Letter at the Open Window,” is dated around 1657/59. X-ray examinations indicated that a picture that had been painted hanging on the wall, with a representation of a naked Cupid, was painted over. New laboratory tests showed that the overpainting was not by Vermeer’s hand but was done much later. (Click on the CC link to get English subtitles for this fascinating story.)
