THE TEAM OF HUMANITY
A proposal that has been circulated but is still in mind’s eye. It’s for getting massive sign-ups to a coalition so high-minded people can link up to become a force.
Years ago, I was tuned into a sense of a mission to collect like-minded people to create a world that’s participatory for everyone. We’d still have rich people but we wouldn’t have anyone who didn’t have food, shelter, and education. We’d be a kind world instead of a greedy one. To deliver these orders from on high, this site has been created for the team of humanity. All are invited to acknowledge being part of a force made up of individuals who self-identify as being on the side of humanity.
There are no dues or rules or any formal membership. Your signature is a recognition that what you find here is what already is in your heart. If huge masses become signatory to this recognition we will be able to exert influence. And if it’s not huge masses, but quality of participants over quantity, we can be heartened by that famous Margaret Mead quote about small groups of committed people changing the world.
Covid has brought home how interconnected we all are and how vulnerable we are as humanity. We sink or swim together. This coalition is intent on helping to shift our worldview to where caring about each other is as important as caring about ourselves, and to getting on with creating the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible. For sure, we will have Zoom engagements — meetings where people really meet are my specialty. Some Zoom get-togethers will be topical, where we chew on what we can do to deal with specific challenges we face. One thing will give rise to another as we trod an evolutionary path together, hopefully contributing to the urgent need of our time to be the cooperative species we were designed to become.
How About One Agreed-Upon Objective?
With our usual patterns disrupted, it’s the perfect time to re-set our course. Just as a declaration we’d go to the moon was what mobilized that effort, how about a declaration now? What would it be? What could do the most good? What is so fundamental that if we achieved it the world would be on a positive course?
How about this?
Cut from our moorings with the future up for grabs, things are reorienting. Working from home could lead to a 4-day workweek. That sort of thing. There’s a logic and an inevitability to certain developments. And, I want to make a case for what I think is the most important thing we could be focused on now, but that thing would need organizing.
What I advocate as the most world-changing thing that actually could happen would be the fundamental right for all people to get sustenance: health care, housing, food, education. For everyone everywhere.
In “Grunch of Giants,” in 1983, Bucky Fuller, a visionary who urged people to think globally, wrote, “I do know that technologically humanity now has the opportunity, for the first time in its history, to operate our planet in such a manner as to support and accommodate all humanity at a substantially more advanced standard of living than any humans have ever experienced.” First, we’d need an agreement that that’s what we want the outcome to be.
Honestly, should anyone have a billion dollars? Let the rich folks have a metamorphosis. They can stay rich. Even very rich. But not excessively rich – for the good of the whole. When people are in poverty they can’t tend the earth, and all of us are committed to tending it as imperative for our survival.
If we come into agreement that this is what we want — that it’s the most intelligent objective, especially as global warming even could eclipse the catastrophe that already has befallen us and this would be the best bet for combatting that — we will do it. Can we set about coming into that agreement now?
